ANOTHER GOOD SEASON FOR DEER HUNTING

The hunting season up until the second Saturday was for the most part terrible when it came to the weather. The first Saturday was nice in the morning, but nasty in the afternoon. The first deer my son Hudson and I saw was a small but great first baldy for him. Although this was not his first deer it was his first deer while having a actual hunting license. The deer snuck in behind us and when he fired the deer went straight down. The Remington 20 gauge 870 with open sights did its job, and the lightfield did its part. 1 hour and 20 minutes later the other deer showed up and hudson connected with another great shot but this time it was with a H&R single shot Ultra Slug Hunter in 20 gauge with a scope. The ammo of choice this time was a Remington Copper Solid, this deer only ran 40 yards and dropped. Congrats to the new hunter. The last day of buck season brought very cold temperatures , and it also brought the great luck of BIG deer moving. The day started out slow but around 9:00 a.m heated up fast. Where my son and I were sitting we heard a shot . Little did we know that one of the biggest deer we ever saw entered the woods, with me and my son very excited. As we were staring into the woods looking where this deer would go we saw it stumble. Here the deer we were seeing was the deer that my friend Kevin O. had shot. What a let down for Hudson and I but what a score for Kevin. I will have to admit Kevin sat many hours this year and did not shoot as many deer as in the past but look what patience can do for morale. From tip to tip it measured 25 3/4, and sported a split brow tine , and also had 10 scoreable points. The weapon of choice for Kevin is a H&R single shot Ultra Slug Hunter 12 gauge with Copper Solids. In a nut shell it was a very slow deer season, with some of the biggest deer I have ever seen harvested or encountered while I was hunting. The last day of muzzleloader I saw 6 bucks, 2 big ones, one nice one, and 3 smaller ones. Although I would love to have shot a big buck myself It's great to see the prospects of what next year might bring. This does not conclude our hunting season with Turkey just about 3 weeks away, and Trout season days away hopefully the Lord will bless us with more successful hunting and fishing trips.

Repeat!

With two more hunters in the group(Travis and Blake), we hit the mountain with great expectations. The same trail as yesterday produced two grouse with no success. The anticipation of the one acre plot from yesterday loomed ahead. Travis and Hudson were to my right, and Blake and Steve were to my left. Travis did not even let us get into position before he took his first grouse of the trip. Just ten yards into the thicket, I saw grouse and tried to push them to the kids. One grouse headed for Blake and he downed the beautiful brown bird. Two more were going to our right, and Travis and Hudson each shot thier second grouse of the trip. Later Travis connected on a scared bunny, the fifth one to drop in two days. With the hunt coming to an end, the total was six grouse, five rabbits, and two squirrels. We also saw a black bear to complete our trip. We cannot wait till next year's oppurtunity. A special thanks to my brother-in-law, Vern, who invites us up here to enjoy this great hunting.
