CARTER'S FIRST DEER!!!!!!!!!

Carter got his first deer today, the deer were all over us from start to finish. The weather was cooler today and we heard some grunting, the rut is on with these cooler days. It was a 4 pointer, a very nice deer for the 12 year old.

Opening Day of Pheasant, a Deer Hunt, and a Coyote

Well, I took off work for a day and took my two sons out for the youth pheasant hunt. So after the all important breakfast we went and took to the fields. Hudson had the hot hand early with missing a rabbit but connecting on a flying pheasant. Missing another one in the first 10 minutes. Before the hunt I told my sons I would take my bow in case of a deer running past us on the game lands. I eventually decided not to take the bow. It would be annoying carrying it all morning. Wouldn't you know in our first field we hunted, a 8-10 point buck (I didn't count the points because I was just looking in a kinda disbelief) with around an 18 inch spread pops out and stand 25-30 yards away. Oh well just another hunting jab in my side. The rest of the pheasant hunt proved uneventful. With a recharging of the batteries, Carter and I went archery hunting in the afternoon. Walking in we did what you don't want to do and bumped a buck before we got to the stand. He actually circled right past where we walked in. Kinda strange I thought. So we nestled in for the afternoon. Behind us as the sun was going down, we heard movement but could not see anything. So I moved to get a better look and wouldn't you know it, One caught my movement, and they moved on. There was 1 button buck, 2 doe, and a small buck in the group. 5 or so minutes later behind us a deer with 10" spikes, and a nice fat body walked in. Carter moved at the wrong time and his opportunity was over. He had the safety off of the crossbow and everything, maybe next time. While we were in the tree stand, I got a text saying my hunting partner on the property shot a coyote. It was a small pup but any yote down is good and should make a nice pelt.

Hoffman Boys Cash In On Opening Day

Well opening day for me was composed of going to work and getting home for the Phillies game. Here is a picture of opening day success. My nephews Travis and Blake scored on two deer on the archery opener. Congrats to the two for their trophies. Hudson will be going to the Oswego River Salmon fishing this weekend, and Carter will be going on his first pheasant hunt Sat. Stay tuned for the update.

REED, a STRIPER, and a CAT

The title sound like a bad 80's movie, but the 9 year old showed up dad and two brothers last night. What seemed like forever we finally got the boat ready and cashed in on two really nice fish. The Hybrid Striper was around 20" and 5 pounds, and the cat was around 23" and 5-7 pounds. The Nock has been good to us with two trips this season 2 cats 18" or over and a 20" striper.

 Well we saw these bucks a few weeks ago and they already look bigger body size and their rack seem to be filling out just nicely. These photos were taken in Montgomery County, and it will be interesting to see if the deer are harvested or not, they seem to be regulars at the local corn bar, there are 2 months basically until buck archery starts we will see if the big guys get harvested or not.  

OLD TIME CATTY FISHING

       Last  night 07/30/2011 we decided to do a little old fashion catty fishing from shore. The boat still isn't 100% ready to go so we picked out a little shore line and had at it. For the most part the little ones were hitting. Carter did catch one nice one though, and it made the night a success.

                               Here is a picture of two very nice Montgomery count bucks. Right now they are buddies   but 3 months from now they will be fighting over the does.

A Little Summer Fun

      

   The kids went fly fishing yesterday and were pretty successful. 2 months until archery, the countdown starts.

POND MONSTERS

When you are kid lazy hot afternoon's should be spent next to a pond. My boys spent the night at their cousins house, while celebrating a birthday they just happen to take advantage of the pond with big carp. I dropped the kids off on Sunday night and it wasn't long before Eric (who was featured during trout season) called me all excited about Hudson fighting a huge Pond Monster. They horsed this thing in for a long time and as Carter was to net the thing (net was way to small for the chore at hand) it broke the line and as the disappointment lingered they plotted the next round. It had the makings of a real episode of POND MONSTERS minus the third world country. So it brings us to Monday as I pull into the driveway I don't know yet that round 3, or 4 was just starting. Yes we were late for the picnic at my mothers house but when you have a biggin on, Dad waits to see what unfolds. As the song says with a little help from his friends the group effort was successful, the first carp landed at this pond. This carp was not the big one but it's not to shabby. There are bigger ones in the pond but they will be there for another day.

Trout Season

With the trout opener long ago now, my brother-in-law and I went to the Unami Creek. We went below the falls and the trout were cooperating. Eric caught 6, and I caught 4 not bad for a after work fishing trip.

TWO BIG GUYS STILL ROAM!!!!

My friend Colin was able to see these two beauties on his game camera in Bucks County PA before Christmas. With those two surviving, next year might not come soon enough. Turkeys are right around the corner. Good luck everone!!!!

Last Minute Baldy

Today I didn't even get to the tree stand before I saw this deer. There were three others with it and I almost doubled up but I couldn't close the deal. This one was my longest kill ever at around 150 yards. As I left the scene, it was like the next big game was calling me as the turkeys went to roost 150 yards away. "I'll be back."

THE BUCK OPENER WEEK IN REVIEW

   

Opening day of the buck season started off with a bang for us at 6:45 a.m. My son (usually semi-cool under pressure) missed a deer first thing monday part human error part shaken hunter syndrome. The morning became more eventful at 9:45 a.m when he downed his first doe of the season. The blurry video reflects the hunt ( I know it is blurry but if you concentrate enough you can actually see it all transpire) one down two more to go. At around 11:00 or 12:00 we moved to another tree stand on the property. We ate and soaked the rest of the day in when another doe walked out around 50 yards out with Hudson connecting again with 2 deer down it is a good day. When I got home I found out that my 2 nephew's shot 3 deer around the Milford, Pike county area. Travis shot a 8 pointer, 1/2 hour later Blake shot a doe, then Travis shot another doe, and a friend named Joe shot a 4 pointer to round out their day. The bigger buck listed above was a deer shot in New Britain Township on opening day,what a monster, and to top he is not even in first place at the big buck contest at Nanny's deli in Tylersport P.A. he is in third. Friday  was the next day my son and I got to hunt. With the day uneventful it makes the Sat. morning wake up a lot harder to bear. With the shower's completed and the dressing completed we felt better about waking up. With 15 minutes till opening day light we heard rustling but when daylight came nothing stood in front of us. Around 6:50 we saw a doe hit the field a good sign that deer are moving my friend Kevin saw a buck and 5 does and he shot one of the does around 7:00 a.m. With the first deer down and a lot of day left My son and I nestled in for a long day in the tree stand. Shooting in the morning was busy in Bucks county this morning with the most hunters in the woods this day deer moving should not be a issue be patient and you will see them. We did not see another deer until 8:50 in the morning. At 10:30 my son and I took a walk to break up the day getting back in the stand resulted in turkey sandwiches and drinks. With food in the stomach it's time to sleep. We sat for another 1.5 hours and I noticed a deer coming through the trees. Idid not sleep after lunch but my son was out like a light so I had to wake him up to "there is a deer and it is a buck". A short scramble for the gun and finding the deer in the scope he missed with the first shot confused on the situation the buck stood there so I gave him the 870 with iron sights 3 shots later the buck was his (he hit it 2 times). What a great conclusion to a great week
